The Courageous Steps Project’s 5th Annual Back-To-School Drive was a major success. With several supporters, sponsors, and volunteers that were able to contribute their time and energy towards shopping, sorting, or delivering supplies, we were able to donate bins of supplies to 27 schools in Eastern Maine (specifically Hancock and Penobscot counties). Schools from GreenBush, to Dedham, to Bucksport, and Bradley, received supplies for their schools. All schools received bins filled with markers, crayons, and other goodies. Brewer Community School Assistant Principal Jason Richards had this to say to our founder & CEO Connor Archer about our back-to-school drive efforts, "Thanks so much for your hard work in gathering these supplies to support the learning of our Brewer students as well as other local students. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by all of us here at Brewer Community School." Many others had the similar message to Connor and the Courageous Steps crew. A total of $2,500 was raised in monetary donations, and 14 locations filled/collected supplies for the event. Governor’s also partnered with us to host a collection day on August 1st where ice cream proceeds also benefited the event. “I am already looking forward to next year’s drive, said Archer in a statement earlier this evening.” Archer encourages any schools needing support, to reach out to him via email at: connor.archer@thecourageousstepsproject.org. The Courageous Steps Project’s Step Forward Initiative held the first annual Step Forward 5K Challenge on Saturday July 28th starting and finishing at Old Town Elementary School. Runners ran through the UMaine Bike Path & Demerritt Forest trails in great pace. Results can be found on www.sub5.com under Road Races, and choose Results. Top 10 finishers of male & female received medals, and runners were also treated to free water, whoopee pies, and chocolate milk. In total, around $1,000 was raised from the first ever Step Forward 5K Challenge. Thanks to all for making it to the race, and supporting the event. The Mt. Desert Island Unified Basketball program recently received a donation of $300 from The Courageous Steps Project. This donation, made possible from our 2nd Annual Unified Basketball Fun-Day, will support their program in helping provide these students with an experience that is with them for years to come. The Courageous Steps Project honored veterans on this Memorial Day by grilling burgers & hotdogs for the Coles Land Transportation Museum barbecue/cookout. Several of our volunteers helped grill and serve the burgers and hotdogs to families participating in the event. The event sponsored by the Coles Land Transportation Museum honors veterans and the sacrifices that were made by those veterans for our freedom. “Anytime that we can give back to our veterans, just provides our volunteers with a great motivation to continue to make an impact on others” said founder & CEO/Executive Director Connor Archer. The Courageous Steps Project had a great turnout for it’s 2nd annual Unified Basketball Fun-Day held once again at Orono High School on Friday March 9th & Saturday March 10th. Teams from Maine high schools of Bangor, Brewer, Ellsworth, Hermon, Mattanawcook Academy/Penobscot Valley, Mt. View (Thorndike), Mt. Desert Island, Old Town, and Orono all participated in this year’s event. We have several photos on our Facebook page, and will be adding those on our website. Founder & Executive Director Connor Archer thanks all volunteers for giving their time to make this event possible for all the teams. The Courageous Steps Project’s Step Forward initiative, recently launched in December of 2017, has already had a tremendous impact on one school in the Bangor area. The middle school students at the Dr. Lewis Libby School are currently listening to founder & executive director Connor Archer through his Step Forward Discussion series that he is doing with schools. Connor is continuing to work with the students throughout the month of March. In April, a community panel discussion event will be taking place in the area. This event will be FREE for the public (especially for families that have a child diagnosed with a challenge, along with educators).
