About Tonya Brown
Tonya Brown joined the Courageous Steps Project Board of Directors in November 2023, but is no stranger to our organization. Tonya has been a volunteer with the Courageous Steps Project since 2017, along with her husband Andy, and two children, Madison and Camden. Tonya has been instrumental with our events and community programs, including our annual back-to-school drive, our Walk-Run event, and our annual Unified Basketball Fun-Day.
Here is her bio:
I am from Athens, Maine and have settled in the Bangor/Orono area since attending the University of Maine in the early 90’s. I studied nursing and graduated with my Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1995. I worked a year or so at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor before finding my home at St Joseph Hospital. I have worked there since, and in the emergency department since 2000. I currently work as staff educator for the ED.
I met my husband, Andy, while working in the ED and we married in 2001, 3 weeks after 9/11 occurred. We welcomed our daughter, Madison in 2005, and son Camden in 2007. We are busy sports parents, supporting each in multiple sports throughout the years. Maddie is now a freshman at UMaine and Camden is a junior at Orono High School. My other volunteer opportunities include Maine Emergency Nurses Association, sitting on the board for several years, elected as president from 2020-2021, and once again from 2024-2025. I also am on the EMS education advisory committee for EMCC and UTC, as well as Trauma Advisory Committee for the State of Maine.
Some of my hobbies include photography, birding, sitting on the beach watching the ocean, hiking, baking, and spending time with family & friends. I am also a supporter of all UMaine sports and New England sports!
